In
early October of '94, I received a phone call at work from Tim. His
father had been admitted a couple days before to the hospital. And
he had taken a turn for the worse. I told him that I was on my way
to the hospital as soon as I could find my supervisor and tell him I was
leaving for the day. Not five minutes later, Tim called back and
told me that his father had died. And that he would meet me
at his father's house. I told him that I would be there in a little
while, that I wanted to stop at Anne's house and let her know what happened.
The minute
I hit my car, the tears started. All the way to her house they came.
I pulled into her driveway and she met me on the porch. Knowing since
I had shown up with out calling in the middle of a work day that something
had happened. We went and sat at her kitchen table, and both cried.
So here I sit with makeup and tears all over my face. And who should take
tha moment to walk through the door. Terry in full uniform. She claimed
up one wall and down the other side that she didn't know that he was coming.
All I could think of was ..Ok here I am with my face a mess and this is
the man she wants me to meet.
He came
in with this huge smile and these big blue eyes just a shining. And
yess in full uniform. I was sunk. Men in uniform had
always been a favorite of mine. My father had worked as a security
guard for a large tractor company throughout my childhood. He wore
a uniform exactly like the local police did.
But being
upset I excused myself to the bathroom where I washed my face and tried
to calm myself down. So here I come back, still all red in the face
from crying, all my makeup gone. And Anne proceeds to introduce us.
I have to give him credit, he never missed a beat. Talked like I
was perfectly made up for the night on the town. I couldn't take
my eyes off of him, them blue eyes were unbelievable.
Anne
told me after he left that I was now on his pedestal. He would make
every chance to see me again. And I told her that even though a man
was the last thing I wanted, he was nice looking. But I wasn't interested.
I told her that I needed to go and meet Tim and find out what was going
on. I would call her as soon as I knew something.
I met
Tim at his father's house where all the family was gathering. I knew
where his father kept all the papers that we needed to have, and that he
set everything for the services up in advance. So I set about getting
these together and made a few phone calls to relatives out of town.
Bobby
came to the house after school like he usually did when I was working.
He spent the evening with Tim's family. I went home and called a
friend of mine to meet me for a quick dinner out. I couldn't sit
still at hame and do nothing. So I got cleaned up and joined my friend
from work, who had told several others and they came along too. We spent
the evening eating and drinking. It did a lot to get my mind off
things.
