The
next episode was with members of Candy's family. She had a Aunt that
lived on the other side of the block. The back yards met at the back corner.
Her children had a trampoline. Bobby playing with Candy's cousins got pissed
off and he took a metal stick he found in the yard and proceeded to make
holes in the trampoline. That ended him being anywhere near their house.
I was
really lost as what to do with him during the day. Some one at work mention
that during the summer time that the Recreation Department, had a section
of volunteers. The kids worked as gophers and helped with different
activities. I made an appointment to speak with the lady that oversaw
the program for the summer. She told me that I would have to speak
with the Chief of the Department to get special permission.
She made
me an appointment for the following day to see him. I had seen him
in different dealing with the hospital. So I felt totally comfortable
talking to him about Bobby. He didn't the full story of Bobby, but
did know that I had trouble with him stealing, and behavior. Mr.
Jacks thought about it for a few minutes and said that they would put him
to work on the volunteer program on a day to day basis. But if he messed
up then he was out. There would be no questions or buts to the deal.
Behave and he could work everyday and then be a big help during the summer
when the other kids were just starting the program.
Bobby
was so excited over this deal. I made sure that he knew that if he made
any trouble that not only would it affect him but me also. And that
the first rumor that I heard that he had been a problem, he was off the
program. Period. I also went on to explain to him that if he volunteered
on a regular basis and when we got him back into some kind of schooling
and he graduated. That if everything worked out that when he was old enough
that he would be able to apply for a job at the Veterans Center. That would
be an excellent job for a kid just starting out. The benefits and holidays
and the pay would be great. He would be able to afford a car and a place
of his own. That was something that he wanted very much.
They
put him to work right away. And looking a lot like his mom, most people
could pick him out with no trouble. And since working in pharmacy, I got
around to a lot of the departments. I loved my job and I was determined
that this was one area that he was not going to turn in to a hell hole.
I kept in almost constant contact with the volunteer department, I wanted
to make sure I caught any problems before they became an embarrassment
to me. I had been there for almost seven years and I wasn't going to lose
that. I had worked too had to get where i was.
He was
doing something different everyday. Some would be answering phones, running
errands for the staff, worked on the nursing home floors with reading or
just spending time with some of the patients. He seemed to really
enjoy it. I really don't know what caused the problem other than boredom.
